My name is Daniel Turner. I’m a photographer from Columbia, South Carolina and I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself and my photographic journey.
I was raised on music. It was prevalent in our household for as long as I can remember. My dad was in a band, so by the age of twelve, I was a comparatively seasoned concertgoer.
Around the same age I was given my first camera, a Pentax K-1000, and my interest in photography sprouted. By freshman year in high school I enrolled in the photography program and spent as much time as I could in the darkroom. As film gave way to digital imaging my photographic interests changed from shooting landscapes to making photos of people.
This all culminated in the spring of 2019. I found myself as one of very few spectators at a weekly invite only blues jam that went on in a hundred year old house that was known as “The Bluz Shak”
The following week I showed up with my camera to document this amazing group of musicians and enjoy the show. The jam space lighting rig seemed like it had seen its share of bars over the years. Low light and moving subjects made for a FUN challenge. That night I knew live music was my photographic niche.
Over the past few years I’ve been fortunate enough to work with various local and national touring acts. I’ve been published in print by the Free Times. I am also a staff photographer/writer for Music Scene Media (my work here). I’m excited to continue capturing and sharing the passion that artists put into performing and the little things that make each show unique.
